Components of Electric Vehicle
Electric Battery: Battery stores the electricity required to run the vehicle. The battery supplies electric current to the motor. And thus, the vehicle runs. The higher the capacity of the battery the higher is the range of the electric vehicle. Most modern electric vehicles use Lithium-ion type batteries. These batteries have higher energy density. It means they are capable of storing more energy.
Inverter: Battery stores the electric current in the form of Direct Current (DC). But, the majority of the motors used in the electric vehicles run on Alternating Current (AC). So, the inverter performs the function of converting DC to AC.
Electric Motor: An electric motor provides the power to rotate the wheels. Motors may be of DC/AC type. However, the AC motors are more common.
Regenerative Braking System: The electric-vehicle has only limited energy available. Hence, you need to save every bit of it. This system recovers the energy lost in braking the vehicle and utilizes it to charge the batteries.
Power Control Unit: The control unit performs the main task. It controls the activities of all the components of an electric vehicle. It monitors the output of the motor, charging of batteries. Also, it provides the necessary information to the driver.
General steps to use an EV charger
Step One
Connect one end of the charging cable to the charging station (if the cable is not already attached – some stations may a have the cable attached).
Step Two
Connect the other end of the charging cable to the EV. Typically, the user will hear a lock-in sound when the charger is secured.
If the charging station is free and does not require payment then the EV will start charging automatically. Otherwise, check the charger screen for further information.
To ensure the EV is charging, look out for indicator lights which will often appear on the vehicle display.
There will usually be information displayed on the charging station screen which will indicate charge times, charge capacity etc.
Step Three
Once the EV is charged, disconnect all plugs, and leave the charger as you found it. This will ensure station care and courtesy for the next user.
When using a fast-charging station it is recommended the user charge to 80% state of charge (SoC).
This will improve vehicle battery care and life.
Step Four
Remember to exercise courtesy and patience when queueing and using public chargers.
Some users may be unfamiliar with charging and may take more time than others. As a rule of thumb, queue as you would normally for petrol services.
To allow access for other drivers, please vacate the station as soon as your vehicle is charged.
If you notice any damage to the charger, please report it to the charge point operator. Charge point operator contact details will usually be listed on the charging station.
Test drive tips car
Give the buyer a timescale. The driver should generally have 30 minutes to an hour to assess the vehicle. You must let the customer know when to return the car if you are allowing an unattended test drive.
Plan the route. If you are accompanying the driver, give clear instructions about where you would like them to drive. It's also wise to ask them about any deviations they want to make. If you are not accompanying the driver, make it clear which places you would like them to take the car, and where they shouldn't. You don't want them to test drive a vehicle on an unadopted road, for example.
Make sure there's enough fuel or charge. You don't want the car to run out of fuel while out for a test drive. Worse still would be for an electric vehicle to run out of charge, where charging stations are not available. Be sure to check this before the test drive begins.
Fit trade plates. You must fit trade plates to the car for your policy to cover demonstrations.
Disinfect the car. Before you send out the vehicle for a test drive, make sure to clean all exposed surfaces. This should include the switches, the steering wheel, the handbrake, internal mirrors, door handles (inside and outside), the gear lever, and the car keys. When the vehicle returns, disinfect it again.
Make clear what you expect from the driver. The customer should remain safe and ensure the safety of others. If you would like the driver to wear gloves or a mask (as is a good practice during the coronavirus pandemic), make them aware of this. Good dealers will expect a test driver to be listening for knocks and noises, so the radio should be switched off while out for a test drive.
Explain the features of the car. If it's safe to accompany the test driver, you can do this while on the road. If not, it's your chance to offer a sales pitch before they set off, making sure they are comfortable with the car as they go.
