Components of an Electric Car
Battery Pack
The Battery Pack is the heart of an electric vehicle, storing electrical energy to power the motor. Electric car batteries are made of various materials, with the most common being lithium-ion due to their high energy density and long lifespan.
Electric Motor
To run the wheels of an electric vehicle, the electric motor is absolutely essential in turning electrical energy into mechanical energy. The motor creates a revolving magnetic field that drives the car from the inverter, which converts direct current (DC) from the battery into alternating current (AC).
Charging Port
The Charging Port enables the battery pack get power by connecting an electric vehicle (EV) to an external power source. Usually referred to as charging stations, these power sources—electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE)—are Type 1 (SAE J1772), Type 2 (Mennekes), and CCS ( Combined Charging System) charging connections abound in variety. Usually utilising a Level 1 or Level 2 charger, home-based charging lets you conveniently overnight charge.
Transmission
Transmission is a crucial electric car component that transfers mechanical power from the electric motor to the wheels. Because electric motors at low speeds produce great torque output, electric automobiles usually use single-speed gearboxes unlike conventional vehicles. To maximise efficiency and performance, several high-performance EVs do, however, use multi-speed gearboxes.
Controller
Managing power flow from the battery to the motor and other EV equipment, the controller is a fundamental electric car component. The brain of the electric car controls the allocation of electrical energy, thereby guaranteeing the motor receives the exact amount needed for various driving circumstances.
Thermal System
An indispensable EV component of an electric vehicle, the thermal system controls temperature to preserve battery and enhance performance of other EV components. Despite electric vehicles being 85% efficient, some heat generation still occurs.
Onboard Charger
Crucially important for electric cars, the onboard charger turns AC power from the charging connector into DC power to charge the battery. This Electric car component guarantees effective charging of the battery from AC outlets.
Power Electronics Controller
The power electronics controller is a vital electric car component that manages the flow of electrical energy to various EV parts. It ensures that the right amount of power is distributed to each component, including the motor, battery, and auxiliary systems.
Prolong Battery Life in EV Models

Avoid Full Discharges
Try not to let your battery level drop too low (e.g., below 20%). Regular, partial charges are better for battery health than fully draining it.

Use Scheduled Battery Checks
Make sure to have your battery system checked during its scheduled service appointments. Dealers have special tools to monitor battery health and performance.

Park in Shaded Areas
Whenever possible, park your EV in a cool, shaded spot, especially during hot weather. Extreme heat can affect battery life and performance over time.
Types of EV Powertrain
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)
Battery electric vehicles are fully electric vehicles that rely solely on a large battery pack to store and provide power to an electric motor. They have no internal combustion engine (ICE) and produce zero tailpipe emissions. BEVs are charged by plugging into electric charging stations, and their range depends on the battery capacity.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles have both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine (usually petrol) on board. They can run on electric power alone for a limited range before switching to a gasoline engine. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles can be charged via an electric plug or refueled with gasoline.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)
Hybrid electric vehicles have an internal combustion engine (usually petrol) and an electric motor, but they cannot be charged via an external plug. The electric motor assists the engine and captures energy during braking to improve fuel efficiency. Hybrid electric vehicles do not operate solely on electric power; the engine is always running to some extent.
Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV)
Extended-range electric vehicles are similar to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles but are designed to prioritize electric driving to a greater extent. They have a larger battery pack and can typically cover a longer electric-only range before the petrol engine kicks in. The engine may act as a generator to recharge the battery, extending the electric driving range.
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV)
Fuel cell electric vehicles use hydrogen fuel to produce electricity through a chemical process in a fuel cell. The electricity generated powers an electric motor to propel the vehicle. Fuel-cell electric vehicles emit only water vapor as a byproduct and have longer ranges compared to most battery-electric vehicles.
